Is my child shy?

November 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Every child will go through a stage of being more shy than usual, particularly in a new situation. So is your child really shy, or are they simply role-playing the part in order to get your attention? Check out the basics of being shy, for example, a child who is really shy will blush and never try to be the centre of attention.

There may be many reasons to explain why your child is constantly shy, but if the shyness manifests out of the blue, it’s worth to analyse what’s changed in the child’s circumstances. It may also help to know what your toddler may be scared of at this stage of their development.

Conquering shyness is a slow process. Lead by example and avoid labelling your child as shy (talk instead about your child “working out the social situation” or “learning to engage in social activities”). Remember that no matter how shy a child, a minimum of good manners is required. Saying hello, sorry and thank you is not negotiable.

You can always discuss this challenge online: Kidspot Social, where parents share their experiences and advice. Related articles:
